Danny's TV Buying Guide

Good, better, and best 55" TVs for someone who just wants a solid TV without becoming an AV nerd

The Deal

You're finally ready to join the modern TV era, but you don't want to become an audio-visual geek. I get it. Here's what you need to know:

  • 55 inches is the right size for your living room setup
  • Built-in "smart" features don't matter — you'll keep using the Apple TV I lent you
  • Dialogue clarity is priority #1 — we can solve this with the right TV or by adding a soundbar later
  • You want this to last 10 years — so we're not going bottom-barrel, but we're also not going crazy

All prices current as of February 2026. These are 2025 models heavily discounted right now (perfect timing before 2026 models arrive in March/April).

Neil's Honest Take

I'd go with the TCL QM6K at $400. It's got Mini-LED tech that normally costs $800+, the picture quality will blow your mind coming from whatever ancient TV you've been using, and the built-in Onkyo speakers are actually decent.

That said, if dialogue clarity is driving you nuts, grab the Roku Select at $270 and add the Ultimea soundbar at $130 for $400 total. The soundbar's VoiceMX feature will solve your "can't hear what they're saying" problem immediately.

About That Dialogue Problem

You mentioned not being able to hear things clearly. Part of that is absolutely those jagoff audio engineers who intentionally undermix vocal tracks these days. But a soundbar can genuinely help.

Two approaches: Start with the TV now, add a soundbar later if needed. Or get a cheaper TV + soundbar combo from the start for the same total budget.

Soundbar Add-Ons

Budget Options ($130-150)

Ultimea Poseidon M60

Ultimea Poseidon M60

Shockingly good 5.1 surround for the price
$130
  • • 5.1 channel with wireless subwoofer
  • • VoiceMX dialogue enhancement
  • • 300W total output
  • • 10-band EQ with 121 presets

Good for: Best bang-for-buck. The VoiceMX feature will help with Danny's dialogue clarity complaints.

Hisense HS3100

Hisense HS3100

3.1 channel with wireless subwoofer and dialogue-focused News mode
$150
  • • 3.1 channel with wireless subwoofer
  • • 480W total power, 6-speaker array
  • • News mode optimized for dialogue
  • • Roku TV Ready with single-remote control

Good for: Great for Danny if he gets the Roku TV. The News mode is specifically tuned for dialogue clarity, plus it's actually in stock at Best Buy.

Mid-Range Options ($230-280)

Samsung HW-B750F

Samsung HW-B750F

5.1 setup with excellent dialogue clarity and Samsung TV sync
$230
  • • 5.1 channel sound
  • • Adaptive Sound with voice enhancement
  • • Q-Symphony (syncs with Samsung TVs)
  • • DTS Virtual:X spatial audio

Good for: If Danny goes with a Samsung TV, the Q-Symphony feature is genuinely cool. Otherwise, great dialogue clarity regardless.

Bose TV Speaker

Bose TV Speaker

Compact, premium dialogue clarity from Bose
$280
  • • Dedicated Dialogue Mode
  • • Compact 23-inch width
  • • Two angled full-range drivers
  • • Bluetooth streaming

Good for: Premium option for Danny if dialogue is his #1 priority. Bose nails speech clarity, though bass is limited without adding their separate subwoofer.

Quick Questions You Might Have

Why 55" and not bigger/smaller?

Based on your room size, couch distance, and shelf dimensions, 55" is the sweet spot. Big enough to feel immersive, not so big it overwhelms the space.

What about OLED?

OLED has better blacks and contrast, but starts around $1,400+ for 55". For your use case (sitcoms, cooking shows, news), the Mini-LED options in the "Good" tier will look fantastic and save you $1,000.

Do I need to worry about burn-in?

No, because none of these recommendations are OLED. LED/Mini-LED don't have burn-in issues.

Can I just use the TV speakers or do I need a soundbar?

Start with TV speakers. The Hisense U6 and TCL QM6K both have surprisingly decent built-in sound. If dialogue is still an issue, add a soundbar later. That's the beauty of this approach — you can upgrade in stages.

When should I buy?

Right now is actually great timing. These 2025 models are heavily discounted before 2026 models hit in March/April. If you wait for "the perfect deal," you might end up paying more for newer models that aren't meaningfully better.
