Good, better, and best 55" TVs for someone who just wants a solid TV without becoming an AV nerd
You're finally ready to join the modern TV era, but you don't want to become an audio-visual geek. I get it. Here's what you need to know:
All prices current as of February 2026. These are 2025 models heavily discounted right now (perfect timing before 2026 models arrive in March/April).
| Tier | Model | Price | Quick Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good | Roku Select 55" | $270 | Simple, reliable, great remote |
| Better | TCL QM6K 55" | $400 | Best value — Mini-LED at budget price |
| Better | Hisense U6 55" | $430 | Brightest at this price, great speakers |
| Best | TCL QM7K 55" | $700 | Anti-glare upgrade if you have windows |
I'd go with the TCL QM6K at $400. It's got Mini-LED tech that normally costs $800+, the picture quality will blow your mind coming from whatever ancient TV you've been using, and the built-in Onkyo speakers are actually decent.
That said, if dialogue clarity is driving you nuts, grab the Roku Select at $270 and add the Ultimea soundbar at $130 for $400 total. The soundbar's VoiceMX feature will solve your "can't hear what they're saying" problem immediately.
"I just want something that works and doesn't break the bank." This is that TV.

Best no-frills option for Danny's first modern TV
The sweet spot. Mini-LED technology at prices that were impossible a year ago. Noticeable picture upgrade, still sensible money.

Mini-LED with Fire TV, excellent brightness and dialogue clarity
55QM6K
QD-Mini-LED powerhouse with Google TV
Stepping up to anti-glare coating and premium features.

Step up from QM6K with anti-reflective screen and more zones
You mentioned not being able to hear things clearly. Part of that is absolutely those jagoff audio engineers who intentionally undermix vocal tracks these days. But a soundbar can genuinely help.
Two approaches: Start with the TV now, add a soundbar later if needed. Or get a cheaper TV + soundbar combo from the start for the same total budget.
Good for: Best bang-for-buck. The VoiceMX feature will help with Danny's dialogue clarity complaints.
Good for: Great for Danny if he gets the Roku TV. The News mode is specifically tuned for dialogue clarity, plus it's actually in stock at Best Buy.
Good for: If Danny goes with a Samsung TV, the Q-Symphony feature is genuinely cool. Otherwise, great dialogue clarity regardless.
Good for: Premium option for Danny if dialogue is his #1 priority. Bose nails speech clarity, though bass is limited without adding their separate subwoofer.
Based on your room size, couch distance, and shelf dimensions, 55" is the sweet spot. Big enough to feel immersive, not so big it overwhelms the space.
OLED has better blacks and contrast, but starts around $1,400+ for 55". For your use case (sitcoms, cooking shows, news), the Mini-LED options in the "Good" tier will look fantastic and save you $1,000.
No, because none of these recommendations are OLED. LED/Mini-LED don't have burn-in issues.
Start with TV speakers. The Hisense U6 and TCL QM6K both have surprisingly decent built-in sound. If dialogue is still an issue, add a soundbar later. That's the beauty of this approach — you can upgrade in stages.
Right now is actually great timing. These 2025 models are heavily discounted before 2026 models hit in March/April. If you wait for "the perfect deal," you might end up paying more for newer models that aren't meaningfully better.
